What to wear for your senior photos. Northern, Va senior photographer

Updated: Jun 26

What to wear for an unforgettable senior photo session!!

What do I wear for my senior session? This is one of the most common questions I get from my senior clients. Planning what to wear shouldn't be stressful. My goal as your photographer is to make this whole process stress-free and fun. I have come up with some tips and guides to help you along the way. Please check out more of my senior clients at https://www.nataliewhiteheadphotography.com/family-portaits

Match your personality. It is so important that your clothes match your personality and style. If you love dresses, bring them. If you are more a jeans and t-shirt type of person, bring that. If you have a more funky vibe, bring clothes that fit that. If you have a favorite jacket that has special meaning to you, bring it! These are your photos!! I want you to look amazing in them. Have fun with your session. Your style is unique to you!

Dress for the season. A cute flowing dress will look amazing in the spring and summer months. I recommend a light, flowing dress that will catch extra movement. It will look amazing in photos. For my guys, bring a nice plain t-shirt or polo with shorts or jeans. If your session is in the fall, bring a cute pair of pants/jeans with a nice fitting top or sweater. You can always pair it with a jacket or scarf to change your look up. If we are photographing you in the winter, think sweaters with a nice pair of jeans and boots. Bring a winter hat, that will go well with your outfit. Have fun with it!

Plan multiple outfits. Most of my seniors, plan for two-three outfits. The first outfit could be dressy like a flowing dress or something more formal like a prom dress. For guys, think a button-down shirt with or without a tie or maybe a nice suit. The second look should be more casual, like a nice shirt with jeans or shorts. Think layers..bring jackets! Jackets, hoodies or vests makes for a great textures in your photos. If you played a sport, bring a shirt or sweatshirt that has your high school on it or maybe something with your future college logo on it. If you want to wear three different dresses or three different pair of jeans with a shirt, just make sure they are a variety of lengths and textures. This will help give your session many different looks! Remember these are just recommendations!

Tips..

  • Try on your outfits before you come to your session. Make sure they fit the way you want them to fit. Make sure it looks good for all angles. We will be doing a variety of poses from sitting to standing to any pose that will give you some movement like spinning or jumping.

  • Underwear..yes I said it! What you wear under your clothes is just as important. If you plan on wearing a light colored top, make sure you have a matching or nude bra to go on under it.

  • Shoes..don't forget shoes. Bring a couple pairs that will go well with your outfits. A lot of the locations I use we will include walking. If you want to bring a cute pair of heals or tennis shoes that you don't want to get dirty, bring them and change when we get to that perfect spot.

  • Choose from clothes you already own. You don't have to buy new clothes. See what you have at home. Do you have a favorite top, jacket or hat. Bring it to your session.

  • Make sure your clothes are ironed. Check for spots or stains.

  • Hair, nails and makeup..if you want your nails done, make sure they are done well. Chipped nail paint will show in your images. Don't try a new hair style for your session. Have your hair colored, cut a couple of weeks before we meet. Bring a comb with you, it will help with fly aways. Bring makeup with you for touch-ups.

  • Props!! Do you play an instrument? Bring it! Did you play sports? Bring your glove, football or ballet shoes. I love getting action shots. Were you in the drama club? Bring a special costume or outfit that has meaning to you. We can incorporate them to your photos.

  • If you have a cap and gown and want to use it, please bring it!

  • Remember, think layers...hats, scarfs, jackets, and vests are a great way to change up your look.

  • Please ask about bringing pets along. :)

Anything else, just ask!

Location, location, location..now that you have your outfits picked out, where are we going to meet? What kind of vibe are you going for? Do you want your session in a place like Downtown Leesburg, with its more urban/city vibe? Do you want your session in a beautiful open field, like Rust Sanctuary? Or maybe you would like a location like, Morven Park which is more historic and has some wonderful backdrops? Do you have a place that has special meaning to you? There a lot of beautiful locations in the Ashburn/Leesburg area that are great for senior photos. Another option that I have used is in Washington, DC. If you are interested in this location, just note that I have to get a permit to photograph there and it will take a couple of weeks to process. I am always open to new and different places. I will work with you to find that perfect location!

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!! I can't wait to photograph you!
